snobbery at its worst

As you probably could tell from myspace comments – my current obsession with the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer has consumed me. Yes, I am in love with a 17-year-old fictional vampire named Edward Cullen. But, I digress. ;o) This obsession prompted me to read reviews on, and one review particularly annoyed me. Some chick thinks she’s high and mighty for being a graduate student of young adult literature. She wrote a review about Twilight. She didn’t like the book. That’s fine; we are all entitled to our opinion. But, her review was written in a manner that made it seem as though she was making a profound discovery and she was oh-so-different and tragically too intelligent to like a silly little novel. :::sigh::: For example, I am not a fan of William Shakespeare. He just doesn’t do it for me. But, I’m not going to say that everyone who likes Shakespeare is an idiot or be condescending to those that do not think just like me. And, that’s what pissed me off about that review, if you liked Twilight, you were essentially an idiot who cannot distinguish what good literature is. What is good literature anyway? Who decides this? This review prompted me to think about the literary canon aka the dead, white men, and who decided that they were the masters of literature. And, that’s what annoyed the most about this review, the need to flaunt that she was a graduate student studying young adult literature. It’s a personal peeve of mine when people flaunt their education when it isn’t particularly necessary. It was as though because she studied young adult literature, it made her opinion of the novel, in a sense, superior to the others. But, I’m sorry she’s not writing a freakin’ proposal about how to save the ailing economy, and she lists her attributes as a leading economist in the world. It’s not relevant. Maybe I’m wrong. I’m just annoyed with people who perceive what others think as inferior because it is not what they believe. It’s snobbery at its worst. Anyway, I’m not sure how to end this rant. So, I’ll just see what everyone has to say… ;o)
