Why Libraries are Awesome…

I am writing this entry on my BlackBerry, while traveling home to get packed and ready for a much needed long weekend away from NYC. When the Blogathon for Louisville Free Public Library occurs (special shoutout to Andy Woodworth for organizing the effort) I will be relaxing.

But, I couldn’t let the opportunity to toot the horn for libraries! Libraries need all the support they can get! I’ll keep it short and sweet.

So… why are libraries awesome?

1. Librarians are the original search engines. Libraries have been, and will be a portal of information and resources always. Take advantage, use libraries, just don’t abuse libraries. :o)

2. Libraries are America’s lifelines, a widely circulated article “Libraries Are America’s Lifelines. Leave Them Alone” by Kenneth David. It’s worth a re-read.

3. Libraries are charitable. I know that at my library never throws out books. We donate our discards, and I know this is a trend for most libraries. Libraries are socially conscious. My top places to donate books: Better World Books and Books for Africa.

I could go on, but the point has been made. Bottom line: Support our libraries!

  1. Its been a good long while since I’ve been in a library. I couldn’t really use my college library because everyone slept in there, and lets just say it seemed like their was a snoring competition. When I was a little kid there was a public library I would go to all the time. I used to always borrow Dr. Seues books and ask my grandfather to read them because the tongue twisters would drive him crazy. I don’t know why its been so long since I’ve been in a library, I definitely read enough. There is actually a small one by me, maybe I’ll check it out.
